For those this is important to - I found it won't play 3D MKV's this way (also ripped using MakeMkv).And also a 4K HDR demo file I found online (25Hz LG demo one) for which it switched to HDR mode. However I've thrown some other 4K files at it - including high frame rate 60Hz ones and it's played them very nicely. I don't - yet - have any 4K UHD rips (a project I'm embarking on - I have a new 'friendly' optical drive but am not sure of the next steps.). But the player switches nicely to 24Hz playback (or 23.98.) for very a very smooth picture (if your telly can handle this correctly which mine can). I found Sicario Atmos track would not play.

On this topic - I also found it played mkvs nicely over the network in general, but with the Dolby issue. Very briefly I'm liking it a lot! My first UHD disc buy - Blade Runner original - played beautifully (and quietly) and looked stunning. I've had in mind to put my initial thoughts up here but not got round to it yet. Nice! I've also been experimenting with the players streaming abilities since pulling the trigger on it a week back or so. So far I have only tested over WiFi, which is a little bit faster in principle than the ethernet port. The x700 seems to play the m2ts files flawlessly so far presenting my receiver with Dolby or DTS HD just as though the disc was in the drive. The m2ts files are the “raw” files from the disc - with all audio tracks and subtitles etc in tact - and can be indexed using Plex and DLNA etc. In theory you could use mkvs for DTS films and m2ts for Dolby films but I’ve decided to keep it consistent.

This is also in line with the spec page in the manual. I think it’s to do with the mkvs not presenting the Dolby core properly. This is because with mkvs I found the x700 only plays HD audio for films with DTS tracks rather than Dolby. I am saving the m2ts files (rather than mkvs - easy to google how to use makemkv for this). I’ve been pleasantly surprised that I can use the X700 as a client to play the lossless 4K rips over my network, so thought I’d share my findings in case helps anyone else.
